Megan's Veil

7 Details You Probably Haven’t Heard About Duchess Meghan’s Givenchy Wedding Dress and Veil

RED: my comments.
What did you think about Megan's veil? Personally, I loved it. I loved her dress and thought she looked beautiful.

5. The Story Behind That Veil: Perhaps one of the most breathtaking elements of the day was the 16-foot veil Meghan paired with her Queen Mary bandeau tiara. Made of a delicate silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza representing the 53 countries of the Commonwealth, the dramatic piece took some 500 hours to make. Workers, including a former Royal School of Needlework student, were forced to wash their hands every 30 minutes in order to keep the tulle and threads clean. Does anyone know where we can get a close-up of the embroidery?

 6. The Secret Personal Touch: in addition to the 53 flora and fauna representing the Commonwealth, Markle also asked that two very personal touches be added to the headpiece. Waight Keller and her team included a Wintersweet, which grows on the grounds of Kensington Palace in front of Nottingham Cottage where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reside, and a California Poppy, the official flower of Meg’s home state, on the veil as a nod to the bride’s heritage Goodness, what a clever idea that was. I wonder where the idea came from, or what her inspiration was for that?

Ivanka and Melania Trump Veils at the Vatican.

So, they were at the Vatican last week. Current papacy and presidency and whatever feelings you have regarding those aside, what do you think of the actual veils?

I thought Ivanka's choice was a pretty bold fashion statement. A little gutsy even for a lady who is unaccustomed to veiling. No?  I like the headband.

But Melania, I could've done you better; softer, more romantic! It looks like it was starched or something. It sort of appears to be like a helmet. And she needs to push it back further on the head. Was she trying to prevent it from falling off?  Maybe a sewn-in comb would've been better if she was worried about slippage. For such a beautiful woman, she should be stunning in a mantilla.

In the end though, I was impressed and thought they showed good form in going the traditional route with modest black clothing and wearing a veil at all. Especially given the things the pope had to say about Donald during the campaign. Nice job, ladies!

Jackie

Jackie Kennedy Onassis has arguably done more for the mantilla chapel veil in the latter half of the 20th century than anyone. Ladies in the Romance countries (Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican City) wore the mantillas. I have two veils that my mother bought in Rome, one of which she wore at a private Mass with Pope Pius XII. Yes, it's now my treasure!

But I'm told that in the United States, in earlier part of the 20th century, women wore hats and sometimes headscarves to Mass. As a young child do I remember a sea of hats at Mass and I remember being bedazzled with at all the different colors and styles. Hats were seen as classy and elegant head coverings.

Then in the 1960's, pictures of the first lady Jackie wearing mantilla chapel veils to Mass appeared. And that was IT. And that became the latest thing. American ladies began to wear the mantilla. In Catholic schools the little round chapel veils became the standard fair. I just missed the cut off for that, sad to say. By the time I hit grade school, the chapel cap was well on the decline.

So, where are the "Jackie Kennedys" of today? Where are those who inspire other to reverence before the Blessed Sacrament? You are she! It's beautiful ladies like yourself who bring back the reverence through the chapel veil. That's such a sight for sore eyes at Mass. You are the "trend setters."

Leaving Mass. I'm noticing she liked to wear her chapel veils "backwards". She how it frames the face? That's a rounded drape effect from a triangular or almond shaped veil.

Saddest days.

A happier time for Jackie.

I'm here in New Orleans with my husband on a short trip. I found this lovely little shop on Jackson Square. It's called Rendezvous, Inc. and the man there sells antique linens and laces, all in fine condition.

He has beautiful baptismal gowns and lace trim by the yard. I got to talking with him and perhaps I'll send him a sample of my work. Things like custom-made bridal veils and first holy communion veils in antique lace would be fun to make and should sell well in his store.

Modesty

"William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 - August 19, 1905) was a French academic painter. Bouguereau was a staunch traditionalist whose realistic genre paintings and mythological themes were modern interpretations of Classical subjects with a heavy emphasis on the female human body.

Although he created an idealized world, his almost photo-realistic style was popular with rich art patrons. He was very famous in his time but today his subject matter and technique receive relatively little attention compared to the popularity of the Impressionists."

When I was in art school, the talk was all about Impressionists and Expressionists and Modern and Post Modern art. Conceptualists and Fauvist, ect. But never Bouguereau. Why? Because modern day art enthusiasts by en large appear to think he's passé. At the point in time that Bouguereau was painting, this sort of Salon art was very popular. Now these days, people look back with a preferential eye towards the innovators. Well, I think his paintings are astonishingly beautiful.

“It seems to be the fashion nowadays for a girl to behave as much like a man as possible. Well, I won't! I'll make the best of being a girl and be as nice a specimen as I can: sweet and modest, a dear, dainty thing with clothes smelling all sweet and violety, a soft voice, and pretty, womanly ways. Since I'm a girl, I prefer to be a real one!”

The Veil from the Ghost Breakers.

My daughter and I were watching this old horror comedy with  Bob Hope (Geoff)and Paulette Goddard( Mary). There's a Zombie, Turner Classic Films says it "pre-dates the Val Lewton classic I Walked with a Zombie (1943) by three years, and it is easy to imagine that film's director Jacques Tourneur taking his visual cue from this film.

Geoff: A zombie has no will of his own. You see them sometimes walking around blindly with dead eyes, following orders, not knowing what they do, not caring.Richard Carlson as Larry: You mean like Democrats?

But anyway, what interested me most was the veil Paulette Goddard was wearing (below). What do you think? Do you like it?

It's an oval shape veil and it's long in the back. The material seems to be sort of rigid, with a sort of flyaway effect. It definitely needs a comb. I'm inspired. You don't see a lot of the longer oval veils out in the pews--especially none like this. I think I may have to come up with one that's similar.
